Vol. 567 No. 6

Written Answers. - Programmes for Government.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

61 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Finance if tax revenues in 2003 are likely to impact negatively or positively on the programme for Government; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14678/03]

Tax revenues to end-April 2003 were 5.6% higher than in the same period in 2002. This compares with a budget day target of 8% growth in tax revenues for the year as a whole. Revenue net receipts to end-April were 1.2% or €104 million below profile.

The programme for Government makes clear that the EU Stability and Growth Pact is the overriding framework for our budgetary policy. Under the pact, Ireland is required to keep the finances of general Government close to balance or in surplus and to take corrective action when there is actual or expected divergence from this objective. The budgetary situation in relation to both spending and revenue performance is kept under ongoing review, as is normal, in that regard.
