Listings of the charitable organisations that have benefited from beef products and from butter allocated under this scheme in 2002 and to date in 2003 follow. The level of support granted in respect of butter amounted to 20.1 tonnes for 2002 and 12.3 tonnes to date in 2003. No canned beef products were distributed under this scheme in 2002 as arrangements were made for a supplementary supply of the same products using beef from the special purchase scheme (SPS). The SPS stocks satisfied demand from charities during 2002 and were only exhausted in early 2003, at which stage distribution of the intervention stocks recommenced. The level of support granted in respect of beef to date in 2003 amounts to 116 tonnes of canned products.
The criteria that apply in the assessment of applications for the scheme is that the organisation must be a reputable charity that provides aid to deprived persons. The Department maintains a list of these organisations and other eligible applicants are added to the list as appropriate as they apply. Certain practical conditions are applied to the schemes in operation in relation to such matters as record-keeping, inspection, and the suitability of facilities for collection, storage and distribution.
