Vol. 567 No. 7

Written Answers. - Tax Reliefs.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

134 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Finance if and when income tax mortgage relief will be given in the case of a person (details supplied) in County Kildare; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15146/03]

I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners that they have no record of having received a claim for mortgage interest tax relief from the taxpayer. A claim form was sent to the taxpayer on 27 May 2003.

Since 1 January 2002 mortgage interest relief is no longer granted through the certificate of tax credits but is given at source by the mortgage lender. The TRS1 form which was sent to the taxpayer on 27 May will enable him to claim mortgage interest relief at source for the current year. If the taxpayer wishes to claim mortgage interest relief for 2002 and-or any previous years he should send full details of his loan together with his P60s and certificates of mortgage interest paid for the relevant years to his inspector of taxes who will process his claim as quickly as possible.
