Vol. 567 No. 7

Written Answers. - Coastal Erosion.

Thomas P. Broughan

Question:

185 Mr. Broughan asked the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources if he will take further action in close liaison with the Minister for the Environment and Local Government to address coastal erosion around Rosslare, County Wexford. [15037/03]

Responsibility for coastal protection rests with the property owner, whether it be a local authority or a private individual. In July 2002, my Department requested all coastal local authorities to submit proposals for coast protection works for the period 2003 to 2006. Wexford County Council submitted a proposal for the continuation of the revetment works at Rosslare at an estimated cost of €300,000. There is no Exchequer funding available for these works in 2003. The question of providing funding in the 2004 to 2006 period will depend on the Exchequer funding available for coastal protection works generally and overall national priorities. Protection of the Dublin-Wexford-Rosslare railway line is a matter for Iarnród Éireann.
