Question:

212 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Health and Children the monitoring system his Department has in place in regard to his Department's objective in respect of the Irish language; the expenditure in achieving that objective; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15103/03]

My Department supports the Government's objective regarding the Irish language to ensure better availability and a higher standard of public services through Irish. This has been progressed by the publication of various reports in Irish, an increase in the Irish content on the Department's website and the identification of officers who are competent to deal with customers through Irish. The quality customer service principles are prominently displayed in Irish in the Department and comment cards are available in Irish. The Department also provides funding to support the cost of training in the Irish language, mainly through Gaelagras.

Monitoring of the implementation of this objective is part of the overall monitoring of the implementation of the customer service action plan, which will be reported on in the Department's forthcoming annual report. It has not been possible in the time allowed to compile all the information requested by the Deputy regarding expenditure on the Irish language. The information is being collated by my Department and will be forwarded directly to the Deputy as soon as possible.
