Question:

222 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Transport the monitoring system his Department has in place in regard to his Department's objective in relation to the Irish language; the expenditure in achieving that objective; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15104/03]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 220 to 222, inclusive, together.

One of my Department's objectives, as set out in the recently published statement of strategy 2003-2005, is to provide a modern progressive operating environment that delivers positive outcomes for the internal and external customers of the Department. I would aim to do so in Irish where desirable or necessary. Progress against the Department's objectives will be examined and reported annually.

Expenditure over the past five years for the functional areas of the Department of Transport would have been incurred in the Department of Environment and Local Government and in the Department of Public Enterprise. Expenditure in the Department of Transport since May 2002 amounted to over €8,000 in respect of training, translation and printing.
