Vol. 568 No. 1

Requests to move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 31.

Before coming to the Order of Business I wish to deal with a number of notices under Standing Order 31. I shall call upon Deputies in the order in which they submitted notices to my office.

I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to discuss the following matter of importance requiring urgent attention: the crisis of confidence in the taxi service, evident in the 24-hour strike now under way; the need for the Government to urgently address the issue of adequate compensation for those whose livelihoods were damaged as a result of the manner of deregulation implemented by the Government; and the urgent need for the Government to honour its commitment to appoint a taxi regulator on a statutory basis.

I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to debate the following issue of public importance: the rewarding of a small group of people who lost over €900 million of taxpayers' money in investments for the State with a junket costing €30,000 whilst, at the same time, we have cutbacks in the back to education allowance and the summer jobs scheme. I ask the Government to reverse these decisions.

I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to raise the following matter of national importance: the dispute involving members of the CPSU and the Department of Agriculture and Food, which is now entering into its 13th week, which is severely disrupting services to the farming community in Counties Kerry, Mayo, Galway and Limerick and Clonakilty in County Cork and which will escalate to other counties if not resolved.

This matter has been raised already but I will ask a bit more nicely because being nasty with this Government is like sending a missile into a haystack, let alone a punch—

The Deputy must stick to the wording submitted to the office of the Ceann Comhairle.

I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to discuss the following issue of national importance: the need to reform the back-to-education allowance, that is, to bring back the original allowance, in order to consolidate the measures that are already working and to allow those most marginalised within the scheme to build up much-needed funds to finance their academic activities during the summer months; and to reverse any other cutbacks that, in reality, defeat the whole purpose of the back-to-education allowance.

I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to discuss the following issue of urgent national importance: the need to debate the implications of the decision by the United Kingdom Government to continue not to participate in the euro currency zone, and the short and medium-term effects this will have on trade, jobs and economic development in this country.

I seek leave to move a motion for the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 on the following important matter of public interest requiring urgent consideration: the need to prevent the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform, who has publicly indicated his opposition to a rights-based society, from setting a dangerous precedent which could unravel the equality law in this State, specifically, his plans to table legislation conforming to the wishes of a powerful industry lobby that would exempt its members from obligations under the Equal Status Act 2000 by allowing them to discriminate and to remove the authority of the Equality Tribunal to investigate and hear complaints of discrimination by this powerful group.

I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to raise the following matter of national and local importance: the situation at Kincon post office in Kilfian, County Mayo, where a post office in existence for generations has been closed by stealth by An Post, following Government policy, and without offering any alternative service to the people, causing extreme hardship, especially to the older people of the area. This is inexplicable in an area where the population is increasing. It does not make sense.

I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to debate the following matter which is of urgent national interest: the need for a review of the licensing arrangements for the fishing vessel, Atlantic Dawn, which is reported to be licensed as a merchant vessel and then granted temporary fishing licences; and to review whether the Government, the Taoiseach and the European Commissioners lobbying for one commercial venture and operator would not have been better lobbying for a large number of small operators in the Irish fishing industry, which would have brought more jobs.

I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to debate the following important matter of public interest requiring urgent consideration: the 24-hour strike by Dublin taxi drivers in protest at the impact of deregulation on the industry and the fact that since deregulation there has been a sharp reduction in the income of taxi drivers as a result of increased costs and greatly reduced productivity caused by the over supply of taxis.

Having considered the matters raised, I do not consider them to be contemplated by Standing Order 31 and therefore I cannot grant leave to move the motions.
