Vol. 569 No. 1

Written Answers. - Overseas Development Aid.

Denis Naughten

Question:

76 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will provide funding to the PREDA organisation of Olongapo City, Philippines, which works with sexually abused children and campaigns against sex tourism; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17335/03]

The Government, through its official aid programme, Ireland Aid, supports a number of significant initiatives and processes which work with sexually abused children in the developing world and campaigns against child trafficking, the commercial sexual exploitation of children and adolescents and so-called sex tourism. Our efforts are mainly channelled through our support for international organisations such as UNICEF, which has a specific mandate in the area of child protection and through non-governmental organisations such as Trócaire, GOAL and Concern and their local partners and counterparts.

The organisation to which the Deputy refers may be eligible for funding under the Ireland Aid human rights and democratisation scheme and my officials would be more than happy to have contact with the group to discuss the criteria for assistance under the scheme and the range and scope of its activities with a view to determining its suitability for funding support.
