Vol. 569 No. 4

Written Answers. - Defence Forces Facilities.

Jack Wall

Question:

158 Mr. Wall asked the Minister for Defence his plans to develop the Army facilities in regard to barracks, roads and sporting and security facilities on the Curragh Camp, County Kildare. [17984/03]

A special reinvestment programme was initiated by my Department in 1999 to complement expenditure on the normal range of building and engineering works for the purpose of providing modern living, operational and training accommodation for the defence forces. This special programme was centred mainly on the Curragh Camp and the bulk of the contracts was completed by 2002. The Curragh programme covered 14 major projects at a total cost of €50 million. A small number of remaining jobs will be integrated into the normal building programme for 2003.

The building programme for the Curragh for 2003 includes provision for the upgrade of accommodation, security requirements, roads and squares, painting, stores and general maintenance, and, subject to availability of resources and other priorities, the programme of investment will continue at the defence forces training centre in the Curragh Camp.
