Vol. 569 No. 4

Written Answers. - Departmental Expenditure.

Olwyn Enright

Question:

177 Ms Enright asked the Minister for Finance the cost of the provision of art works to the Department of Education and Science at Athlone, County Westmeath; when these art works were purchased; if they have been provided to the Department in Athlone on a permanent or temporary basis; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17963/03]

The Government is committed to a policy of incorporating an arts dimension into every Government building project. This involves setting aside 1% of all construction budgets, subject to limits, for an artistic element.

The sum of €14,267.92 was expended under the 1% for art scheme in connection with the project for the new prefab office building in the Athlone campus. The works were purchased in September 2001. These art works will remain permanently located in Athlone.

Guidelines for the acquisition of art under this scheme by Departments with construction budgets are set out in the public art research project steering group report to Government 1997 and also in the Office of Public Works Art Management Handbook 1998. The art works located in the Department of Education and Science campus in Athlone were purchased under the Government's per cent for art scheme.
