Question:

204 Mr. Wall asked the Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism the number of films made here in 2003; the comparison of this number with other years; the discussions he has had to improve the position with the relevant bodies; the discussions he has had with the Minister for Finance in regard to financial incentives to attract such films; and if he will make a statement on the matter. My Department's area of responsibility relates to the certification of films under the Section 481 tax relief scheme. A total of ten such certificates have been issued so far in 2003. The number of section 481 certificates issued in the first half (to 23 June) of each of the past five years are as follows:

My Department, in conjunction with Bord Scannán na hÉireann, commissioned consultants to carry out a study of the economic importance of film production in Ireland. I will review the position on receipt of the consultancy report.
