Question:

259 Mr. Timmins asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of passports which have been reported stolen or missing in 2000, 2001, 2002 and to date in 2003; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17982/03]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 258 and 259 together.

I have been informed by the Garda authorities that it has not been possible in the time frame allowed to compile the information requested by the Deputy as to the number of people who have been charged for using false passports. I will revert to the Deputy as soon as the information is made available to me.

With regard to the number of passports which have been reported stolen or missing, I have been informed by the Garda authorities that the information requested is not readily available and could only be obtained by the expenditure of a disproportionate amount of staff time and resources.
