Vol. 569 No. 4

Requests to move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 31.

Before coming to the Order of Business I wish to deal with a number of notices under Standing Order 31. I will call on Deputies in the order in which they submitted notices to my office.

I seek leave to adjourn the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to discuss the Government's failure to sanction the construction of a new school of music in Cork.

Why does the Deputy not welcome the new institute?

He will probably take credit for it.

A school of music was promised before the committee on corporate governance.

It was a straight promise which has been broken.

(Interruptions).

I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to raise a matter of national importance, namely, the devastation of community employment schemes due to the savage cutback in scheme numbers by the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, and to allow the Minister to make a statement on the matter.

I seek leave to move a motion for the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 on the following specific and important matter of public interest requiring urgent consideration, namely, the necessity to address the serious situation resulting from the imposition of tolls on the newly opened Drogheda bypass. Given the requirement of industry on this island to use road hauliers, it is anti-business and counter-productive to place excessive charges for trucks on toll plazas as demonstrated by the recent opening of the Drogheda bypass where charges for trucks are €4.95 per trip. In this instance road hauliers are boycotting the bypass and continue to drive through the town of Drogheda, affecting the quality of life of people and businesses in the town.

I seek leave to move the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to debate a matter of public interest requiring urgent consideration, namely, the contents of the landmark treaty due to be signed today in Washington between the European Union and the United States, which will be binding on Ireland and which the Dáil has not had an opportunity to examine. The treaty contains an agreement on extradition and mutual assistance which has major implications for the civil liberties of Irish citizens and I ask that the House discuss it prior to its signing.

I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to clarify the position of the Government in relation to the wild and inaccurate assertions by the United States Administration in promoting GMO food and agriculture and the need to declare Ireland a GMO free food island.

Having considered the matters raised, they are not in order under Standing Order 31.
