Vol. 570 No. 2

Written Answers. - Driving Instructor Register.

Róisín Shortall

Question:

456 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Transport if his attention has been drawn to the concerns among some driving instructors at the suitability of the driving instructors register as the regulator of driving instructors; the basis on which the driving instructors register was chosen to perform this role; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18379/03]

The driving instructor register currently operates a voluntary register of driving instructors and is not the regulator of driving instructors.

Proposals being developed by my Department for the regulation and quality assurance of driving instruction will involve a test of the competence of individual instructors. The design of the standards that a driving instructor must meet is at present being formulated by a working group comprising representatives of my Department and of instruction interests.

It is envisaged once a standard has been finalised, the selection of an independent body or contractor will be the subject of a public procurement process.
