Written Answers. - School Accommodation.

Seán Ryan

Question:

184 Mr. S. Ryan asked the Minister for Education and Science if, in respect of St. Brendan's National School, Loughshinney, County Dublin, his attention has been drawn to the fact that the full-time resource teacher is teaching from a small library, the shared resource teacher is working from the staff room, and the shared support teacher is required to teach on occasions from the end of the corridor; and if, in view of the fact that the additional pupil intake for September 2003 will result in an additional mainstream teacher, he will sanction the provision of temporary accommodation for September 2003 to meet the overall needs of the school. [19095/03]

The 2003 capital programme has now been published and full details of individual projects are available on my Department's website at www.education.ie. Those schools that were allocated grant aid towards the provision of temporary accommodation are listed in Section 12 –primary – of the 2003 building programme. The management authorities at St. Brendan's National School, Loughshinney, applied for grant-aid towards the purchase of temporary accommodation at the school. My Department advised this school that given that it had an alternative accommodation option, it is not in a position to grant aid this project.

Question:

185 Mr. S. Ryan asked the Minister for Education and Science if, in respect of the accommodation needs of Swords Educate Together National School, County Dublin, his attention has been drawn to the fact that representatives of the board of management came away from a meeting with his officials on 13 March 2003 with the understanding that they had the support of the officials to secure planning permission and quotations for temporary accommodation on a site secured, following the intervention of persons (details supplied); if his attention has further been drawn to the fact that the school has no accommodation to cater for 100 students in September 2003; and if he will allow the temporary accommodation to proceed in view of this. [19096/03]

I am aware of the situation regarding the accommodation needs of Swords Educate Together National School. My officials are in contact with the school authorities with a view to resolving the accommodation difficulties for September 2003.
