Paul Connaughton

Question:

217 Mr. Connaughton asked the Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism when the sports grants allocations will be made; if his attention has been drawn to an application by Shiven Rovers FC at Newbridge, Ballinasloe, County Galway, to the fact that the club has already invested more than ?225,000 of its own funds since 1994, and to the fact that there is a substantial amount of money needed to complete the project; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19180/03]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 215 and 217 together.

The national lottery funded sports capital programme administered by my Department, allocates funding to sporting and community organisations at local, regional and national level throughout the country. The programme is advertised on an annual basis.

The club in question was allocated a grant of €148,000 under the 2002 Sports Capital Programme, of which €88,439 has been paid to date. The remainder of the grant will be paid on receipt of eligible paid invoices or certificates of payment from the club, with the exception of 5% of the grant, in this case €7,400, which is retained pending the receipt of certification of completion of the defects liability period of the project.

The 2003 sports capital programme was advertised in the national newspapers on 23 and 24 March 2003. The closing date for receipt of applications was 25 April. A total of 1,330 applications were received before the closing date, including one from the organisation in question. All applications are currently being evaluated against the programme's assessment criteria, which are outlined in the guidelines, terms and conditions of the programme. I intend to announce the grant allocations for the programme as soon as possible after the assessment process has been completed.
