Vol. 570 No. 3

Written Answers. - Dáil Reform.

Joe Higgins

Question:

54 Mr. J. Higgins asked the Taoiseach if he will report on his plans for the reform of Dáil Éireann. [11580/03]

As the Deputy is aware, the matter of Dáil reform is essentially one for the House itself, which under the Constitution has responsibility for making its own rules and Standing Orders.

The Sub-Committee on Dáil Reform was appointed by the Committee on Procedure and Privileges on 10 September 2002 and had its first meeting on Wednesday, 9 October 2002.

I have initiated consultations with the political parties concerning participation in the Oireachtas by Northern Ireland representatives.

Responsibility for promoting Dáil reform is shared by all parties in this House and the Government will play a constructive part in exploring with those parties opportunities for improving procedures.

Questions Nos. 55 and 56 resubmitted.
