Vol. 570 No. 4

Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

Olwyn Enright

Question:

179 Ms Enright asked the Minister for Education and Science the position regarding Malahide Community School following the appointment of a full design team prior to October 2001; the enrolment projections being used in the plans for the redevelopment; when he envisages the school being ready for use; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19380/03]

The proposed new building for Malahide Community School will cater for a long-term projected enrolment of 1200 pupils. The project is currently at stage 3, outline sketch scheme, in the architectural planning process. However, in view of the scale of the capital programme as published and having regard to the level of financial commitments to be met from projects already in construction, my Department does not envisage that it will be in a position during this year to allow architectural planning for further large scale building projects, including that at Malahide, to progress beyond their current authorised stage.

The timing if when this project can proceed to tender and construction is dependent on the financial allocation for 2004 and subsequent years. In the meantime, my Department has offered the provision of temporary accommodation to alleviate difficulties at the school. A response from the school is still awaited.
