Vol. 570 No. 4

Written Answers. - Residential Institutions Redress Board.

Joan Burton

Question:

218 Ms Burton asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of payments which have been made to former residents of industrial schools and institutions; the institutions in respect of which; the amount of money which has been paid to date; and the highest and lowest payment. [19420/03]

The Residential Institutions Redress Board is an independent body established under the terms of the Residential Institutions Redress Act 2002. Section 28 of that Act prohibits the release of any information on individual awards, thus protecting the confidentiality of both applicants and the board. However, I am aware that on the board's website, www.rirb.ie, the redress board has stated that to date it has reached settlements in 47 cases.
