Question:316 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if it is proposed to establish an office of police ombudsman. [19203/03]

As I have stated previously the programme for Government contains a commitment to establish an independent Garda inspectorate, which would have the power to investigate complaints and which would also have the powers of an ombudsman. Work on the preparation of a general scheme of a Bill to provide for this is well advanced, and I expect to bring it to Government and publish it very shortly.
