Vol. 570 No. 4

Written Answers. - Legislative Programme.

John Gormley

Question:

321 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the reason for the delay in proceeding with the private securities services Bill 2001 which he had previously promised to have enacted by early 2003; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19254/03]

The private security services Bill 2001 lapsed on the dissolution of the 28th Dáil and was restored to the Order Paper on 18 June 2002. It completed Second Stage on 13 December 2002 and has been referred to the Select Committee on Justice, Equality, Defence and Women's Rights.

During the extensive discussions on Second Stage, many suggestions for changes and amendments were put forward for consideration. All of these have been examined and arising from this examination, a series of amendments to the Bill has been drafted. I have obtained Government approval to table these amendments on Committee Stage. I am aware that the select committee regards the Bill as urgent and necessary, and that it intends to give priority to the Bill in its future work programme.
