Vol. 571 No. 1

Written Answers. - Decentralisation Programme.

Paul McGrath

Question:

375 Mr. P. McGrath asked the Minister for Finance the progress made to date on proposals for decentralisation of a Government Department to Mullingar, County Westmeath. [20678/03]

As I have said previously, a wide range of important issues, including the national spatial strategy, have to be considered before a final decision is taken on a new programme of decentralisation. It is vital that all involved are consulted, be they staff concerned about their futures or departmental managements concerned about the delivery of the public services for which they have responsibility. The process of reaching a decision on a major initiative such as a new programme of decentralisation is still ongoing, but the Government remains committed to moving forward the progressive decentralisation of Government offices and agencies. I am aware of the case made for Mullingar and it will be given full consideration, together with all of the submissions and representations which have been received by my Department, as part of the deliberative process.
