Vol. 571 No. 1

Written Answers. - Detention of Person.

Finian McGrath

Question:

414 Mr. F. McGrath asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the action which was taken by the Government in relation to the detention of a person (details supplied) by the Israeli authorities and the media report on the case. [19693/03]

As the Deputy will be aware, the person to whom he refers was released by the Israeli security services and voluntarily left from Israel to return to London on 16 July. As he was travelling on a British passport, he received consular assistance from the British Embassy in Tel Aviv. Nonetheless as an Irish national, and at my request, the Irish Embassy in Tel Aviv was active in maintaining close contact with his family, the British Embassy and the Israeli authorities throughout the period of his detention. In particular the ambassador expressed my concern to the Israeli authorities at the circumstances of his detention.
