Vol. 571 No. 1

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

Pádraic McCormack

Question:

480 Mr. McCormack asked the Minister for Education and Science the position regarding the linking up of the Abalta school at Bishop O'Donnell Road, Knocknacarra, Galway, to a mainstream primary school; if his Department will finance the Abalta school to expand from the current numbers of six children suffering from autism attending the school; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19835/03]

The facility referred to by the Deputy has recently changed premises and my Department is continuing to fund the rental of this new property for the current school year. In addition, my Department's building unit is currently investigating the availability of suitable school accommodation to cater for this service.

An application has been received by my Department for six additional pupils to attend this facility. My Department requested the service providers to forward a psychological assessment for each child. To date, five assessment reports have been received. These reports have been referred to the National Educational Psychological Service Agency for confirmation that placement in this service would constitute an appropriate educational response in each case. The matter is under consideration by NEPS at present.

An evaluation is currently being carried out by my Department's inspectorate of educational provision for children with autistic spectrum disorder. As well as facilities using the applied behavioural analysis method of instruction, this evaluation includes provision in settings such as special schools, special classes and children integrated in mainstream schools. It is envisaged that the evaluation will be completed before the end of school year 2003-04.
Question No. 481 answered with Question No. 454.

John Bruton

Question:

482 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Education and Science the additional funding which is being put in place in 2003 for St. Joseph's in Drumcondra to provide the additional requirements for Braille books and books for students who are visually impaired; the funding he has allocated in 2001, 2002 and to date in 2003; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19895/03]

Funding of €407,304 and €406,926 was provided by my Department in 2001 and 2002, respectively, in respect of the brailling of text books at St. Joseph's, Drumcondra. While funding for 2003 is likely to be of the same magnitude, the precise figure can only be determined following receipt of a claim from St. Joseph's which is expected later this year.
