687 Mr. Penrose asked the Minister for Education and Science the current position with regard to a person (details supplied) in relation to the Department's recognition of her qualifications; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21173/03]
In order to be fully recognised to teach at primary level in this country, and therefore be entitled to take up permanent posts, teachers must have undertaken a recognised pri mary teaching training course and possess a recognised primary teaching qualification.
At primary level teachers are class teachers, rather than subject specialists, and must be qualified to teach the range of primary school subjects to children aged four to 12 years.
In the case of the person referred to by the Deputy the file was referred to my Department's inspectorate for consideration and I understand that further documentation is being sought in order to confirm whether this person holds qualified teacher status to teach the full range of primary school subjects to children aged four to 12 years.
