Question:

1036 Mr. Crowe asked the Minister for Transport if he will consider reopening the Broadstone line in north Dublin. [19738/03]

I propose to answer Questions Nos. 1034 and 1036 together.

I have received from Cabra Community Council their proposals for the development of a rail link from central Dublin through "Cabra Junction" linking the Dublin-Maynooth line, Dublin Airport and Swords including connections with Heuston station and the Luas. The Dublin Transportation Office strategy, A Platform for Change, is the accepted blueprint of the transport needs for the greater Dublin area. The DTO's preference for a rail link to Dublin Airport is for a metro line via Broadstone as part of a wider metro system. This is the only context in which re-opening of the Broadstone line has been considered in recent years.

Phase 1 of the metro as proposed by the rail way procurement agency, RPA, involves a line from the airport to the city centre. The RPA, charged with procuring the metro, has concentrated its work on developing the outline business case for Phase 1 of the metro. I have received the outline business case for Phase 1 from the RPA. I am considering all of the options and will be bringing proposals to the Government in the coming weeks.
