Vol. 571 No. 1

Written Answers. - PSV Licences.

Denis Naughten

Question:

1137 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the current number of valid PSV licences in County Roscommon; the number which are in use; the requirement there is to use these licences; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19976/03]

A public service vehicle licence is granted by the relevant local authority for the purpose of the provision by the vehicle to which the licence refers of either a public hire or private hire service depending on the category of licence in question. In the case of a licence to drive a small public service vehicle, such as a taxi, hackney or limousine, responsibility for the granting of such licences rests with the Garda Commissioner.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that there are currently 313 small PSV licences valid in County Roscommon. The existing regulations, Road Traffic (Public Service Vehicles) Regulations 1963 to 2000, do not impose specific requirements on the holders of such licences as to the use of the licenced vehicles in question.
