Vol. 571 No. 1

Written Answers. - Court Procedures.

Finian McGrath

Question:

1156 Mr. F. McGrath asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will consider asking the legal profession to discard wearing the outdated 19th century wigs while working in the courts. [20142/03]

Section 49 of the Courts and Court Officers Act, 1995, provides that notwithstanding any rules of court a barrister or a solicitor when appearing in any court shall not be required to wear a wig of a ceremonial type. The decision whether to wear such a wig is therefore a matter for the individuals concerned.
