Written Answers. - Human Rights Issues.

Aengus Ó Snodaigh

Question:

1200 Aengus Ó Snodaigh asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform when he intends to publish the Government's response to the recent report of the European Committee on the Prevention of Torture and Inhumane or Degrading Treatment on Ireland. [20621/03]

The Committee for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, CPT, which operates under the aegis of the Council of Europe, visited Ireland for inspection purposes in May of last year and a report to the Irish Government on this visit was subsequently submitted to my Department.

At the request of the Government, the CPT published its report and the Irish Government's response to its findings, on 18 September 2003. The report and the Government's response are available on the Council of Europe's website – www.coe.cpt.int. Printed copies of the report and the Government's response have been laid before the Houses of Oireachtas and I will also arrange for copies to be circulated to the Deputy and the other opposition spokespersons on justice.
