Vol. 571 No. 1

Written Answers. - Programme for Government.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

216 Mr. Durkan asked the Taoiseach the extent to which the programme for Government is likely to be affected by the changing economic situation; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21277/03]

The programme for Government is a five-year programme and it is the Government's intention that by the end of our term, we will have implemented almost every commitment in our programme. While the current international climate has meant that we have not had the resources to implement some commitments as quickly as we may have wished, it is important to recognise that a programme for Government is an ordered series of priorities and the challenge in implementing it for us has always been to do it properly and for the long-term. That means making the right choices and ensuring our policies complement the sustainable growth of our economy into the future.

By continuing to provide strong leadership and managing our way through this period of uncertainty, the Government will ensure Ireland will be well poised to take best advantage of the inevitable upturn when it comes.

Against the background of a global downturn, the Government is determined to act prudently so that we can secure Ireland's fiscal and economic stability moving forward. In that way we hope to maximise resources for the Exchequer to allow us to continue to implement our programme.

Over the five years 1997-2002 of the previous Fianna Fáil-Progressive Democrats Government, over 90% of our programme for Government was delivered. I am confident that when the mandate of the current Government is complete we will be in a position to present to people an equally impressive record of delivery and achievement.
