Vol. 571 No. 1

Written Answers. - Electronic Records.

Ruairí Quinn

Question:

1334 Mr. Quinn asked the Minister for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs the steps which have been taken by him to ensure that a professional system has been put in place for the retention of electronic records, within the section of the public service for which his Department has direct and indirect responsibility, having regard to the requirements of the Freedom of Information legislation and the National Archive legislation; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20524/03]

At present my Department is in the process of developing an information and communications strategy to support its business strategy and legislative requirements.

It takes some time to develop and then implement an ICT strategy for a new Department. The strategy will be completed by November. Its implementation will address my Department's ICT needs in order to support the retention of electronic records having regard to the requirements of the freedom of information legislation and the National Archive legislation.

All bodies operating under the aegis of my Department have been made aware of their statutory responsibilities. They are engaged in the development of comprehensive IT strategies to facilitate better citizen access and continuous improvements in service.
