Question:

1338 Mr. Boyle asked the Minister for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs the air access currently available on Irish islands; and the cost of such facilities. [21328/03]

At present my Department provides assistance in respect of the following air services to the islands:

Aran Islands

All year round fixed wing air service. Six return flights daily Monday to Friday and three return flights daily on Saturday and Sunday.

Three year contract in place from 01/02/02 to 31/01/05 at a cost of €621,866 in year 1, and at a maximum cost of €745,016 in year 2 and €867,973 in year 3.

Tory Island

Winter only helicopter service provided in conjunction with the North-Western Health Board.

Expenditure of up to €70,000 approved for each winter season.

In addition to the above services the Department of Defence may provide the services of an Air Corps helicopter on occasions when emergency access to the mainland is required by island communities.
