Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

Dan Neville

Question:

265 Mr. Neville asked the Minister for Education and Science when a resource teacher will be appointed for a pupil (details supplied) in County Limerick. [21434/03]

Following receipt of a report from the national educational psychological service, my Department has approved an allocation of three hours per week resource teacher support for the pupil in question. Arrangements are being made to notify the school authorities of this allocation in order that the necessary supports can be put in place as soon as possible.

John Deasy

Question:

266 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will grant a full time resource teacher to a school (details supplied) in view of the fact that it was applied for in November 2002, and that demands on this support have increased significantly since then; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21435/03]

The application referred to by the Deputy was responded to on 9 December 2002. The response in question gave sanction for one full-time resource post to the school. The principal of the school recently indicated to my Department that he never received this letter. A copy has since been sent by post to him.

John Deasy

Question:

267 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will grant special needs assistant support for a number of students at a school (details supplied) in view of the fact that they have students in need of this support; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21436/03]

My Department received an application from the school referred to by the Deputy in June 2003. All applications for resource teacher and special needs assistant resources received after 14 February 2003 and by close of business on 31 August 2003 will be examined on the basis of the supporting professional report(s) and in the context of the resources already available to the school. The process involves an examination of each application and supporting documentation by a dedicated team of inspectors and psychologists and schools will be informed of the outcomes as early as possible in the school year 2003-04.
