Vol. 571 No. 2

Written Answers. - Diplomatic Representation.

David Stanton

Question:

140 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the facilities available in Croatia for Irish citizens to enable them to obtain replacement passports in the event of loss; his plans to upgrade the consulate and other such services in Croatia; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20866/03]

Irish citizens in Croatia who require assistance of a passport or consular nature may contact the Honorary Consul of Ireland in Zagreb who will make the necessary arrangements on their behalf. This would include the issue of an emergency travel document in the event of a passport being lost or stolen. Ireland currently has diplomatic relations with Croatia on a non-residential basis. The Irish Ambassador to Slovenia is also accredited to Croatia.

Ireland's network of overseas missions is kept under continuous review. As the Deputy will appreciate, however, constraints on the resources that can be made available for opening new missions require that any expansion of our diplomatic network must be incremental and be based on a thorough assessment of the costs and benefits involved. At present, there are no plans to change the status of our diplomatic relations with Croatia.
