Vol. 571 No. 2

Written Answers. - Job Losses.

Phil Hogan

Question:

206 Mr. Hogan asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the steps she is taking to address recent job losses in the food services sector involving two companies (details supplied); if her attention has been drawn to the fact that the current uncertainty created by her review of the groceries order is adding to concern by food suppliers who feel vulnerable to the pressures of large multiples; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [21383/03]

I understand that Enterprise Ireland has been working with the crisp company to encourage new product development and enhancement of its export strategy, and has approved support for this purpose in respect of its Coolock plant. The closure of its Terenure plant is part of a major corporate restructuring programme. I also understand that the bakery company in question ceased operations in August last due to a lack of competitiveness.

As regards alternative employment for the workers affected in both companies, the services of FÁS have been made available to them. These services include career counselling, training and job placement opportunities.

Since announcing that I was reviewing the groceries order, I have received a large amount of correspondence from interested parties seeking retention of the order in its present form. I have also met with a number of parties to discuss their concerns. In determining what course of action, if any, is appropriate in relation to the order, I will take into consideration the interests of all affected parties, including food suppliers.
