Question:

194 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for Education and Science the involvement of his Department in the national youth health programme; the funding made available by his Department towards this programme in 2003; his future plans for the development of the programme; the number of young people involved in the programme; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21801/03]

The national youth health programme is a partnership operated by the National Youth Council of Ireland with the youth affairs section of the Department of Education and Science and the health promotion unit of the Department of Health and Children.

A payment of €37,505 was made by my Department in April 2003 towards the operation of the programme in 2003. This amount represents half of the total grant paid in 2002. The Department is currently considering the final allocation for 2003, having regard to financial resources available and the amount requested. The national youth health programme will be notified of its final allocation shortly.

The ongoing development of the programme is discussed at management committee level on which the Department is represented. A work programme has been agreed upon for 2003 and is currently in operation.

Based on information provided by the health promotion co-ordinator at the National Youth Council of Ireland, it is estimated that approximately 2,130 young people will benefit from the national youth health programme in 2002-2003.

The ongoing development of the programme is discussed by the National Youth Arts Advisory Committee on which the Department is represented. A work programme has been agreed for 2003 and is currently in operation. Question:

196 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for Education and Science the involvement of his Depart ment in the provision of resources for the development of a network of youth information centres and youth information resource units; the number and location of the various youth information centres; his plans for further development of such centres and for the development of youth information resource units; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21803/03]

The youth affairs section of my Department provides financial assistance for 27 youth information centres located around the country. Details of the number and location of the youth information centres, as requested by the Deputy, are given in the following tabular statement.

Youth information constitutes an important part of the youth service and youth information centres provide a valuable service to young people on a wide range of subjects. I have recently asked the National Youth Work Advisory Committee, NYWAC, to investigate and report to me on the future requirements in relation to youth information provision and services. I will consider the situation further on receipt of this report.
