Vol. 571 No. 3

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

John Deasy

Question:

16 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Education and Science if an increase in resource hours and a special needs assistant will be granted to a person (details supplied) in County Wexford in view of their multiple learning difficulties and psychological assessments; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21492/03]

I understand that two and a half hours per week resource teaching support and access to special needs assistant support have been sanctioned by my Department for the pupil in question. This level of support was approved on the basis of the professional documentation submitted by the relevant school and is consistent in nature and extent with the general response in similar circumstances. I further understand that the application indicated that the child has a specific speech and language disorder as well as a mild general learning disability. However, no speech therapy report was forwarded with the application. In order for my Department to review the case, such a report should now be submitted.
