Question:

294 Ms B. Moynihan-Cronin asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of special needs assistants currently in place in secondary schools in County Kerry; the schools in which these are based; the number in each school; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22260/03]

My Department allocates resource teacher posts, special needs assistant posts and concessionary resource teaching hours to second level schools and vocational educational committees to cater for pupils with special needs.

Applications for such support are made to my Department by the relevant school authorities or vocational education committees. Each application is considered on the basis of the professionally assessed needs of the pupil(s) involved and the nature and level of the support provided is based on the advice of the National Educational Psychological Service.

To date my Department has allocated a total of 9.26 wholetime equivalent special needs assistant posts to second level schools in County Kerry.
The schools involved and the level of their allocations are as follows:

Question:

295 Ms B. Moynihan-Cronin asked the Minister for Education and Science the nature and terms of reference of the proposed audit of the special needs assistants service; the proposed timescale for the review; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22261/03]

The position is that a general audit of resource allocations to national schools in support of pupils with special educational needs is to be undertaken by my Department. The exact timeframe and terms of reference for the process have not yet been decided.

I confirm, however, that the purpose of the audit is to ensure that those resource allocations continue to be targeted to best effect.
