Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

Paul Kehoe

Question:

304 Mr. Kehoe asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of schools in Wexford, primary and secondary, which have had building work completed in the years 1994 to 2002, inclusive, and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22316/03]

I can inform the Deputy that over the period 1994 to 2002, inclusive, one new school and eight extensions were completed at post-primary level in County Wexford.

Over the period 1998 to 2002 at primary level five extensions were completed. The information required by the Deputy for the period prior to 1998 at primary level is not readily available and would involve extensive research to determine exact data. Should the Deputy require information on a specific school in County Wexford, I shall be happy to provide the necessary information.

Primary level – extensions to schools: 1998, 3; 1999, 1; 2000, Nil; 2001, Nil; 2002, 1.

Post-primary Level – new school and extensions to schools: 1994, Nil; 1995, 1; 1996, 1; 1997, 1: 1998, 1; 1999, Nil; 2000, Nil; 2001, Nil; 2002, 5.

Question:

306 Mr. Kehoe asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of applications from County Wexford which are in his Department waiting on building work for both primary and secondary schools; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22318/03]

All large-scale projects at various stages of architectural planning are listed on a county by county basis in sections 6 and 7 of the 2003 school building programme that was published on my Department's website in January.

The information in relation to applications that have not yet commenced architectural planning is not readily available in the format requested by the Deputy. However, if the Deputy wishes to request information on specific individual schools I would be happy to provide this to him.

Progression to tender and construction will depend on the budgetary allocation for 2004 and subsequent years, together with the priority assigned to individual projects.

Question:

308 Mr. Kehoe asked the Minister for Education and Science if his Department will agree to meet three deputations from primary schools in County Wexford which are in urgent need for building work to be completed; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22320/03]

Earlier this year I published the schools capital programme for 2003. In publishing the programme, I stressed the importance of an open and transparent system for deciding priorities and I also published the criteria used by my Department. I am sure the Deputy will agree that is the fairest way to deal with all schools. In the light of this approach to the schools capital programme, it would be unfair to other schools for me to become involved in discussions on individual projects.

It is open to schools to contact my Department's planning and building unit directly in relation to the assignment of priorities to individual projects in accordance with the published criteria.
