In the 2003 schools building programme which was published earlier this year, the grants scheme for minor works to national school properties has a standard rate of €3,809 per school and a rate of €12.70 per pupil. The grant based on the pupil rate issued to schools in May 2003 whilst the grant based on the school rate is expected to issue before the end of the month.

Should the Deputy wish to ascertain the exact level of grant applicable to an individual school, I shall be happy to provide that information.

An application for major capital investment from Scoil Mhuire Fatima, Dublin Road, Drogheda is under consideration in my Department. It is considered that the best option for providing accommodation for this school is to build a new school on a site which is in the ownership of the parish.

The timing of when this project can commence architectural planning is dependent on the financial allocation for 2004 and subsequent years and the competing priorities for that funding by reference to the published criteria for prioritising large-scale projects. In the interim, my Department is providing grant aid of €300,000 for the school authority to carry out emergency works at the school. It is expected that these works will be carried out this year.
