Vol. 571 No. 4

Written Answers. - Food Marketing.

Arthur Morgan

Question:

354 Mr. Morgan asked the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources his plans to transfer the marketing division of his Department based in BIM to the Department of Agriculture and Food under the direction of an Bord Bia; the way in which he views this move might improve the marketing of Irish marine products; and his views on whether it is a serious fragmentation of his Department's responsibility in this important sector. [22369/03]

The Government is considering how the effectiveness of the State's overall food marketing effort can be improved. In this regard, structures for delivery of services are being examined. While BIM has an enviable record in the marketing and promotion of Irish seafood, I believe that it would be unwise to rule out any initiatives which could improve the State's performance in this area, in the interests of underpinning and expanding jobs for Irish seafood producers and processors.
