Vol. 571 No. 4

Written Answers. - Ambulance Service.

Jerry Cowley

Question:

403 Dr. Cowley asked the Minister for Health and Children when the legislation on paramedic grades in the ambulance service will be completed; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21927/03]

Emergency medical technicians are at present precluded from administering certain life saving medications and from using certain medical equipment. In order to address these restrictions the Pre-Hospital Emergency Care Council submitted proposals to my Department in relation to the introduction of the emergency medical technician – advanced programme to the ambulance service. I was pleased to announce policy approval earlier this year to this initiative. The drafting of the regulatory changes necessary to give effect to this initiative is at an advanced stage and will be completed shortly.

Question:

404 Dr. Cowley asked the Minister for Health and Children when the overdue report into the feasibility of the helicopter emergency medical service will be published in view of the continuing loss of life and disabilities due to the lack of such a dedicated service; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21928/03]

My Department and the Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety, Belfast, commissioned a feasibility study and report on the costs and benefits associated with the introduction of a dedicated helicopter emergency medical services for the island of Ireland. My Department understands that the report will be finalised shortly. The findings of this report will be considered by my Department, and the DHSSPS, in the context of developments in the emergency medical services generally.
