Written Answers. - Light Rail Project.

Paul McGrath

Question:

447 Mr. P. McGrath asked the Minister for Transport if it is Government policy to construct a metro to Blanchardstown as part of phase one of the metro development, and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22123/03]

The Dublin Transportation Office strategy, A Platform for Change, is the blueprint of the transport needs for the greater Dublin area. The DTO's strategy proposed a metro system running from Shankill to the south of the city to Dublin Airport, connected to an orbital line which includes Blanchardstown.

The programme for Government contains a commitment to develop a metro with a link to Dublin Airport. I have received the outline business case for phase one from the Railway Procurement Agency (RPA). Phase 1 of the metro, as proposed by the RPA, involves a line from the airport to the city centre designed to connect at a later stage to Blanchardstown as part of the orbital route.

I am considering all of the options and will be bringing proposals to the Government in the coming weeks.
