179 Mr. Kenny asked the Taoiseach the number of staff employed by his Department; the bodies within its aegis which are covered by the benchmarking agreement; the projected costs in 2004 of paying this award; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21640/03]

The current number of posts – whole-time equivalent – in my Department, as sanctioned by Department of Finance, is 220.7. Returns are made to the Department of Finance on a monthly basis to reflect this figure. The bodies within the aegis of this Department which are covered by the benchmarking agreement are: the National Economic and Social Council, NESC; the National Economic and Social Forum, NESF; the Information Society Commission, included in my Department's costs; the National Centre for Partnership and Performance, NCPP; the Law Reform Commission; the Attorney General's office; chief State Solicitors office; Director of Public Prosecutions; Central Statistics Office, including the National Statistics Board. Benchmarking increases have been awarded to all staff in the above bodies where their salary is less than the maximum point of the principal officer scale. The projected overall cost of benchmarking for this Department for 2004 is €491,000. This increase has been calculated in accordance with Department of Finance guidelines. The projected overall cost of benchmarking in 2004 for the NESC is €18,644; the projected overall cost of benchmarking in 2004 for the NCPP is €14,615; the projected overall cost of benchmarking in 2004 for the NESF is €2,800; the projected overall cost of benchmarking in 2004 for the CSO is €1.8 million; the projected overall cost of benchmarking in 2004 for the DPP's office is €600,000; the projected overall cost of benchmarking in 2004 for the Law Reform Commission is €7,600; the projected overall cost of benchmarking in 2004 for the Attorney General's office is €242,000; the projected overall cost of benchmarking in 2004 for the Chief State Solicitors office is €430,000; the projected overall cost of benchmarking in 2004 for the Information Society Commission is included in my Department's costs.
