Dáil Éireann debate -
Wednesday, 8 Oct 2003

Vol. 572 No. 1

Requests to move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 31.

Before coming to the Order of Business I propose to deal with a number of notices under Standing Order 31. I will call the Deputies in the order in which they submitted notices to my office.

I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to discuss a matter of urgent national importance, namely, yesterday's announcement by the Constituency Commission that Clare is to be included in a new north-west constituency, formerly the Connacht-Ulster constituency, and that County Clare be given Objective One status should the decision be approved.

I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to discuss a matter of urgent national importance, namely, the publication of the latest waiting list figures which confirm failure of this Government to significantly reduce hospital waiting lists, as promised in the Government health strategy, and the need for the Government to reassess its strategy in the light of these figures.

I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to discuss a matter of urgent national importance, namely, the need to debate today's decision by the Government to stop works on the DART upgrade project through the month of December, to tease out the financial and transport planning implications of such a breach of contract and to urgently examine why the Minister for Transport was apparently unaware of any details about this most important transport project.

I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to discuss a matter of urgent national importance, namely, the fact that four counties in Ireland, Monaghan, Leitrim, Carlow and Offaly, have no business acceptance office for large-scale business-type post. Monaghan also had its sorting office wound down in favour of Athlone, before which an excellent staff did everything possible to provide next-day delivery. All this has happened without the knowledge of the Minister in charge, as demonstrated by the Minister of State at the Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, Deputy Noel Ahern, during Question Time in this House yesterday. We need a full debate on An Post as a matter of urgency.

Having considered all the matters raised, they are not in order under Standing Order 31.
