Vol. 572 No. 2

Written Answers. - Health Board Services.

Michael Ring

Question:

147 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Health and Children the amount the hospice unit attached to the Sacred Heart Hospital in Castlebar, County Mayo, cost; the number of patients in it now; the patient numbers for the past three years; and if it ever opened. [22661/03]

As the Deputy may be aware responsibility for the administration of health services in County Mayo rests with the Western Health Board. My Department has, therefore, asked the chief executive officer of the board to investigate the matter raised by the Deputy and reply direct to him as a matter of urgency.

Question:

148 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Health and Children if a fully independent outside investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of a person (details supplied) in Tullamore Hospital, and not a health board commissioned investigation, will be sanctioned considering that Parliamentary Question No 1020 of 30 September 2003 was not answered. [22662/03]

I have already advised the Deputy of the position in relation to this case on 30 September last.

I do not consider at this point that there is a need for a separate investigation into this case. As I indicated to the Deputy previously, the Midland Health Board has offered to meet with the family of the deceased patient to discuss a number of matters raised arising from the draft report of the review team into this case. My Department is advised by the board that a response is awaited from the family.
