Vol. 573 No. 2

Written Answers. - Community Development.

Bernard Allen

Question:

177 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for the Environment Heritage and Local Government if he will provide a global grant to Cork City Development Board in order that it will have greater flexibility in the funding of local initiatives that accord with the board's integrated strategy; and if he has received and considered the board's submission on same. [24630/03]

Implementation of the county/city development boards' strategies for the economic, social and cultural development of their counties and cities is the responsibility of the member agencies represented on the boards. Where actions to support the strategies have been agreed by the relevant agencies they are being implemented by them having regard to available resources.

Recently I received a copy of the CCDB's submission. At present it is not possible to introduce an additional grant on the lines proposed. However, consideration is being given to ways in which the CDBs can be assisted to carry out their key role to co-ordinate public services at local level in the context of the current review of community and local development programmes and structures, involving the Ministers for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs and Justice, Equality and Law Reform and myself.
