Local authorities are, as required under the Housing (Traveller Accommodation) Act 1998, in the process of implementing their five year Traveller accommodation programmes covering the period 2000 to 2004, inclusive. Local authorities have indicated that they hope to address the identified need for Traveller accommodation within the lifetime of the programmes. However, they were not required by the Act to set annual targets or deadlines for the provision of such accommodation.
The details of the permanent accommodation, standard local authority accommodation, group houses and halting site bays, provided by or with the assistance of the relevant housing authorities from the commencement of the programmes to the end of 2002, the last full year for which figures are available, are set out in the following table. These figures are from the annual count of Traveller families undertaken by local authorities and figures provided to my Department. They also include houses provided by Travellers with the assistance of local authorities.
