Vol. 574 No. 5

Written Answers. - Garda Investigations.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

242 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform further to Parliamentary Question No. 241 of 13 November 2003, the number of occasions on which a person (details supplied) has been arrested, detained or questioned in the past 18 months; if he has authorised the continuation of this process in the coming months having regard to the existence of a separate case currently before the courts, the outcome of which can be affected by continuously detaining the party involved; his views on the continuation of this process; if he has authorised or approved the use of Garda resources in such similar circumstances or contemplates doing so in the future; if his attention has been drawn to the likely consequences in such circumstances; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [27774/03]

As I informed the Deputy in my reply to Parliamentary Question No. 241 of Thursday, 13 November 2003, the matters raised in the Deputy's question relate to an ongoing Garda operational matter and it would not be appropriate for me to intervene in or comment further at this time.

The Deputy should already know, however, that Ministers for Justice, Equality and Law Reform do not interfere in Garda operational matters and most certainly do not interfere in the operation of the judicial process.
