Vol. 574 No. 5

Written Answers. - Garda Operations.

Charlie O'Connor

Question:

245 Mr. O'Connor asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will compliment the Garda Síochána in Tallaght on their work with the Kiltalown estate management committee in Tallaght, Dublin 24, which is deeply concerned regarding difficulties in the estate; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [27797/03]

I am delighted that the Deputy has given me this opportunity to thank the gardaí in Tallaght for their continued best efforts and hard work. I also understand that at a public meeting on 10 November 2003, the gardaí were praised for their efforts at tackling public order issues and various other problems in the area.

The neighbourhood Garda unit in Tallaght has a long working relationship with estate management committees. Community gardaí are in daily contact with the committees on issues of anti-social behaviour, drugs and general youth problems. Clinics are held each week with housing-estate management teams where the local community can discuss issues and report incidents. The gardaí, in conjunction with the estate management committees, also work closely with South Dublin County Council and, to date, this is proving very successful.

Finian McGrath

Question:

246 Mr. F. McGrath asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of murders committed over the past 12 months; and the number which were solved. [27854/03]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that in the 12 months from 16 November 2002 to 15 November 2003, 48 unlawful killings were reported to the gardaí, of which 28 are recorded as detected to date.
